After he decides to turn onto an imaginary side street, this criminal steps from the car as if he’s going to submit, but then attempts to sprint off, getting tasered in the back.
Police officer predicts car crash during routine stop

Always with a mind towards safety this officer inadvertently (or psychically) saves his and his suspects life. While writing the woman a ticket he asks her to step away from her car and onto the side of the road, explaining how dangerous it would be if a car were to crash into hers. And as if on cue, seconds later, one does.

Now I’m forced to wonder about being stopped on the side of the freeway by an officer. Should I get out of the car? That does look dangerous.

Ghost car chase or supernatual hoax on (or by) Garden City Police

Ghostly prankster, lucky drunk, or well calculated stunt pulled on or by the Garden City police department for fun? You decide.

It bums me out seeing something like this and not being able to find any more info about it. There are a lot of discussions on the internet about it, but no more info about the resulting investigation or other news stories. Heck, even Snopes has no listing for this except in their forum .

I visited the Garden City Police Department website (here or here) hoping they would at least have some amusing thing to say about the incident, I mean really this was on CourtTV. It seems as though this would be worth mentioning on their website. There was no mention of it, but they did have safety tips and warnings for Halloween October 25 , 2006. So maybe they are just behind on updating their website.

I’m going with the whole thing being a clever viral video stunt by the Garden City PD in conjunction with Garden City government to increase local tourism. Brilliant actually, as I will definitely be heading to Garden City on my next coast to coast roadside attraction tour.

New Safety Apparel Regulation

I was recently informed of a new Safety Apparel Regulation effective November 24, 2008, federal mandate, 23 CFR 634. This mandate states *” All workers within the right-of-way of a Federal-aid highway who are exposed either to traffic (vehicles using the highway for purpose of travel)or construction equipment within the work area shall wear hi-visibility safety apparel.” *

As I understand this regulation it effects any workers on foot within the right-of-way of federal-aid highway: construction, survey crews, first responders, law enforcement and tow truck drivers are effected to name a few.

This is how the FHWA defines Hi-Visibility Safety Apparel, it is intended to stand out during both daytime and nighttime usage which meets the requirements of ANSI/ISEA 107-2004 performance class 2 or 3. ANSI/ISEA requires that class 2 has at least 775 square inches of hi-vis and the fluorescent background must be at least 201 square inches of reflective material.

This regulation effects many workers on federal-aid highways and those whom do not adhere to the mandate could face costly fines from OSHA.

The good news is CoTradeCo offers numerous safety vest that are compliant with the 23 CFR 634 ruling. If you are not ready for this regulation please see our Jackson Safety line of safety vest. Trader Dan has done a lot of research on this regulation and is willing to assist with quick info and assistance.

If you would like more info on the new safety apparel regulation please contact us and we can get you a copy of the official mandate.

Introducing the TMK Tactical Mic Keeper...officer invented

We are proud to announce that we are carrying the TMK Tactical Mic Keeper for police, first responders, and other individuals who need to make sure their microphone stays in place. This handy device keeps your mic secure and where you want it, even during pursuits and during a struggle.

Watch the video above to learn more about the TMK Tactical Mic Keeper from the creator, Police Officer Brian E. Webster. In his own words…

“One evening after dark I had to chase down a suspect who had a knife. Once I caught him and tackled him to the ground I could not find my microphone. It had fallen off my uniform and was in between me and the suspect making it impossible to radio my position.”

“I was able to take him into custody and everything turned out okay but since then I have heard many stories of officers losing their mics and things going horribly wrong because of it. Therefore, the TMK was born.”

Added news resource link to First Responders community

We have a long way to go before we have perfected our community networking and resources, but we grow and add a little bit more everyday. Know that we want to build a truly useful resource for you and we try to be selective in the resources and links we provide.

I just added a link to the 1st Responders broadcasting network. They provide a wide variety of National and State news for law enforcement and firefighters, as well as video and audio news. They have regular informative columns on useful topics such as Advanced Extrication – 101, Arson Investigation, Health and Fitness, and Staying safe.

If you are looking for news and information for first responders from people who understand your job, then I highly recommend checking out the 1st Responders Broadcast Network

This resource link will always be available in our First Responders community

If you have any other useful first responder resource or service links that you think people should know about feel free to post it in our community blog stories feature along with a small review or summary. Useful suggestions are always considered for inclusion in our communities .

Other resources for first responders

Of course I’d just as soon you never leave our site, I would be remiss in not pointing out other useful resources for the folks that visit our site.

A few places that you may not have heard of, but probably should are…

World Firefighter.com

If your firehouse wanted a forum for your website, but you weren’t sure how to go about doing it, these fine folks set one up for you on their server and all you need to do is use it. Like I said, it is my wish that we can help build a fine community for you here (let us know what you need), but the World Firefighter folks are offering a fine free service.

Officer.com

Officer.com forums

Great news and information site for you folks in blue. And the forum seems busier than a coyote chasin’ dinner. They’ve got a magazine and everything.

Then there is the companion site…

Firehouse.com

Firehouse.com forums

Thanks for all your hard work.

LaDainian Tomlinson celebrates first responders in San Diego

On Tuesday, December 12, LaDainian Tomlinson hosted an event at Kit Carson Park in Escondido, California to honor first responders.
In a heart felt speech to a huge crowd of firefighters, police officers, and medical personnel Tomlinson conveyed his gratitude for their hard work,
and saving his home.

“You know what, people think athletes are the real heroes, but all we do is entertain and try to set the right example for people.
But the firefighters, the sheriffs, the nurses, the doctors, you guys are the real heroes because you’re protecting us and keeping us safe.”

The NFL MVP and his wife, LaTorsha, wanted to show their appreciation for the hardwork and sacrifices during Fire Storm 2007.

Just before the couple received a reverse 911 call giving them a mandatory evacuation,
LaDainian was trying to watch the games and apparently unaware of the fires to the dismay of his wife.

According to Tomlinson, after the evacuation he sneaked back into his neighborhood to check the situation.

“There were fires everywhere. The most amazing thing to me was how the firefighters and the Sheriff’s Department was in there.
They didn’t care about their lives. They were just trying to protect our homes.”

“That’s when for me it struck home how important this was and how much I appreciated what they were doing.”

Of everything that could have been going through his mind, his personal possessions, including a prized NFL MVP trophy, were not in his thoughts.
“I wasn’t worried about that. I was worried about the firefighters who were fighting the fires.”

“My wife and I went back and it was amazing. I don’t know how the fire did not burn my house down,” LT said.

Lunch was served to over a thousand individuals, many of them first responders in uniform. Despite Tomlinson inviting the heroes to the event to be honored, many of the people still took the opportunity to join Tomlinson on stage for photographs and autographs.

According to a Union Tribune article by J. Harry Jones
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER :

“One was Poway Division Chief Jon Canavan, who was in charge of the engines that saved Tomlinson’s home. The two men hugged. “It was a wonderful event,” Poway Fire Chief Mark Sanchez said. “It came from the goodness of his heart.”

Photo caption from U-T article: Escondido Fire Department engineer Mike O’Connor held onto a signed Chargers helmet for a co-worker who won it in a raffle at yesterday’s event.
