The Breakfast Club—Can it be done? I want to say no…

I just this moment heard that there is a new film coming out called ‘American Teen’. It is meant to be ‘The Breakfast Club’ of today.

I initially was turned completely off by the entire idea and became defensive over the whole project of something that mega being re-presented during a time that is completely different.

Upon second thought though, I wonder if the new version may be able to grip the young masses to such a deep degree that it’s inspiration did/has?

Will I go see it? Hmmm…more soon after I have had a chance to wrap my mind around this.

Wrap you mind around it no more…see the trailer and my comments on it here

I was defensive too Colleen, but I am often put off by needless remakes. I do understand remaking certain classic films when technology has so drastically changed or a new storytelling style can be applied, but more often these days, remakes seem to fall under the category of, “how much more money can we make without having to tell an original story.

That said, read my post. You will be pleasantly surprised.

All this talk of remakes has made me wonder. Music is often ‘covered’...film is often ‘remade’...but what are the corrolaries in literature?

Off the top of my head I can only think of Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West as an even similar concept to remaking a film. But this is more a retelling of stories and characters from a different vantage point. This is similar to the remake of the play Hamlet as Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead_ by Tom Stoppard, but again, hardly a remake.

I’m going to do some research and maybe talk about this phenomena in the future.

Take care Colleen.
