The Lakers Are Cover Machines!
In one of those weird anomalies, the biggest public play of the NBA (the Lakers) keep covering. Even in last night’s game, when they try to let the other team cover, it just doesn’t happen. In the final thirty seconds, in a game clearly already over, Utah kept throwing up three pointers, calling time outs and fouling. Down by anywhere from 9 to 12 over the last 18 seconds, they finally cut the lead to 6 (spread was 6.5 to 7 depending on when you got it). They fouled again, and Sasha made both free throws to bump it to eight. With maybe 10 seconds left they lobbed up another three, and finally missed. Down by 8 points, with 6 seconds left, they FOUL! I started to laugh watching this, as the writing was on the wall. But again, both free throws were made by LA seeming to care less about the line. In an all out hustle play for absolutely no good reason, Utah drove the ball down and had a WIDE OPEN lay up with 3 seconds left, but chose to kick it outside to lob up a 3 pointer (to be down by 7 and hit the number). They missed a wide open look, giving the Lakers and people backing them yet another win. I believe they have covered every single game so far in the playoffs (6-0). Something to keep in mind as the playoffs continue…
