Naan Bread (Plain)
beingzoe 4 months ago // Subscribe Home & Family Life Recipes

Naan bread is a must when eating and enjoying Indian food. Though naan could be enjoyed with any meal as it is a flavorful flat bread well suited to eating with saucy foods (I like to rip off pieces of naan and use it in place of silverware, eating with my fingers).

This naan bread recipe takes about 40 minutes to prepare and 15 minutes to bake at 275F (140C) degrees

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp dried active yeast
  • 1 tsp demerara sugar (type of raw cane sugar normally brown in color)
  • 7 oz plain flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 tbsp natural (plain) yogurt
  • 2 tbsp milk

Utensils

  • small bowl
  • teaspoon
  • tablespoon
  • mixing bowl
  • rolling pin
  • oven tray
  • pastry brush
  • tea towel

Preparation

See the video for detailed visual step by step instructions.

  1. Mix yeast with 1 tbsp warm water, stir in sugar, put bowl in a warm place for five minutes until covered with froth
  2. In mixing bowl, add flour salt, and baking powder; mix well
  3. When yeast mixture is ready: Stir into mixing bowl vegetable oil, yogurt milk and yeast mixture; mix lightly with a spoon
  4. Knead the dough until soft and pliable; about 5 to 6 minutes
  5. Let the dough rise; cover dough with damp tea towel in a warm place; approx. 10-15 minutes; dough will be spongy and springy
  6. Preheat oven to 275F (140C) degrees
  7. Create 4 equal sized dough balls and roll into a long oval about a 1/4 inch (1/2 centimeter) thick
  8. Grease baking tray lightly with oil
  9. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes until golden, soft, and crumbly

Serve fresh and hot with your favorite dish such as Chicken Curry
