UK Cases on Vacation!
UK Cases on Vacation!
UK Cases on Vacation!

So, like most other people I spent my Labor Day weekend on vacation and not doing very much laboring at all. My parents have a lovely second house up in Utah and I headed up there to visit them along with my cousin and his girlfriend, my other cousin and her husband, and my cousin’s husband’s brother (got that?), who was already up there filming a movie because he’s a big shot actor. Anyway, my dad, who is the original Survivor Man, really enjoys that one of the perks of my job is that he gets lots of UK product to test out in the field. And of course, the UK cases were up in Utah with us and accompanied us on all our adventures.

I have to say, in writing about UK cases I generally spend a lot of time talking about all the impressive features like how tough, waterproof, dust proof, etc. they are, and I forget what is, to me, the number one selling point: the things are practical and great to have around in any situation. My parents threw both of them in the bed of their truck to go up to Utah and during the entire drive from San Diego they didn’t have to worry about rain or anything else they drove through affecting the contents. We took them fly fishing with us and they held all the gear and kept it dry on shore. And on Labor Day, when we all headed up to the Uinta Mountains to go hiking and got hit with an unexpected snowstorm, my dad’s various survival tools stayed safe and dry (speaking of which, after that snow experience I will never again question his need to bring a sleeping bag, water purification system, and flare on a 3 mile hike ever again). I guess I tend to think of UK cases as being the thing you need when you are about to go on a safari, or ice fishing, or out on the high seas, but the truth is they are pretty nice to have around on a family vacation as well.

Anyway, thought I would post some pictures up here of the cases in action, among them my cousin Laura and I in our fly fishing waders, and the case in a blizzard!

What did everyone else do over the holiday weekend?

Sounds like your family could do a reality show with Underwater Kinetics as a sponsor!

That must have been a nice trip. My experiences in Utah have been mixed. The only really positive experience I’ve had there is skiing at Brianhead years ago.

I would love to organize a mountain biking trip up that way though as I hear the riding out there in the Utah territory is phenomenal (not to mention the scenery).

Have any more pics of your adventure? I would love to see some of the sights!

As for me, I did a whole lot of yard work (still trying to finish a huge landscaping job after something like two years). I also mixed two shows for the new band I’m working with, The Burning of Rome . The show at the Beauty Bar in San Diego Sunday night went really well (special thanks to Marshall for his help and patience). Also saw a great new band that night, The New UP from San Francisco, who were just starting a coast to coast self-booked tour from SF to New York. Very cool. Kind of mellow, sometimes rockin’, chic singer drinking whiskey on stage, and a flute player. Very cool. I’ll have to get a disc though to give a full review.

Oh, and I also received word that I am taking over again as the audio engineer at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido again as my predecessor who took over after a left a season (and a half?) ago, was recently promoted to the position of Technical coordinator. I’m excited to be back in my old position, but also a little worried about scheduling, between CoTradeCo, the theater, and my new role as “sound guy” for The Burning of Rome. But the position comes at a good time for me for other reasons.

All in all it was a busy, frightening, exciting, liberating, and all too labor filled labor day weekend.

Anybody else do something interesting?

Utah is pretty amazing and, if you can stand the altitude, there are some great trails for running, and biking. I am still learning to snowboard so I have mainly been there in the summer to hike and hangout, although I got up there a few times last winter and snowshoes/fell down a lot trying to snowboard. What negative experiences have you had there Zoe?
I have some more pictures I can share to convince you that you should give it another try… how do I put them in a response like this?

Just looking at pictures of Bryce blow my mind. I don’t need convincing to visit Utah (but I still want to see your pictures). My negative experiences were derived from societal belief structures. I felt more welcome as a hippie freak in a Texas truck stop than I did there. It is a cultural thing and I suppose I should have learned the native customs prior to visiting. I will leave it at that.

For different reasons, I have felt similarly about my birth state Pennsylvania. There were certain attitudes that I simply could not reconcile as child, or abide as an adult, that are rampant and latent. For that reason I often describe it as a beautiful place to visit but the people can be ugly sometimes. However, I’m not perfect (but I’m working on it:) and I do my best to not judge.

Unfortunately we have no way to upload images to comments. You can always link to pictures you already have online, but you would have to start a new post or edit this one to add more pictures. (Feature? Should you be able to upload pics to a comment?)

Snowboarding huh? How do you have time for all of this stuff while training for marathons. I thought marathon training was a lifestyle unto itself.

Okay, I uploaded a few to my Picassa album to share here#, mainly of my cousins and I in our flyfishing gear (I am the one in the blue shirt), and the blizzard we all got to play around in up in the hills.

Hey, we have a house in Park City, Utah! I have to at least attempt snowboarding. Personally I still haven’t figured out quite why anyone would want to strap a board to both of their feet and hurl themselves down a mountain, but I guess other folks don’t understand why I would want to run 26.2 miles, so it all works out :)

Thank you for sharing the pictures. You all definitely look like you are having a good time.

I would love to have a house in Park City. And I did say sometimes (implying not always or everybody). Absolute statements are always false :)

I am among those who have never quite understood running (except when being chased by a bear). That said, while my bike was partially out of commission while I had my rear shock serviced, I actually considered attempting it (at least jogging) just to stay active. Alas I didn’t. Some people I know keep suggesting television shows I should watch and I find eating snacks, having a gin and tonic, and watching television far to engrossing to branch out into things like running.

Hey, as a total aside, I posted a video from Pelican yesterday about candlepower versus lumens, which then led community member Dave to ask a question, that led me to do a bunch of research, and “write” a long rambling incoherent response on candlepower, candela, peak beam candlepower, lumens, ansi lumens, and foot-candles.

Maybe you could take a look and share some information from Underwater Kinetics regarding how they measure lumens and other specs on their flashlights?

Take care.

It’s always reassuring when people use their own products. Before meeting up with Trader Dan I didn’t realize how useful industrial strength water tight cases were to the average person. I had always assumed that serious cases like UK Underwater Kinetics cases were just for industry and extreme adventurers, but I’ve found even in my simple life, I get a lot of piece of mind knowing that the things I put in my cases are safe. And your bed of the pickup truck example is a perfect case in point (I apologize for the inadvertent pun).

Thanks for sharing your Labor day vacation adventures. Utah is a beautiful place. Unlike zoe I’ve never had a bad experience there.
